The city of Tustin was founded by Columbus Tustin and his partner Nelson Stafford around
1870. Both men purchased 1,300 acres of what was then known as Rancho Santiago de Santa
Ana for a dollar and fifty cents per acre. By the 1880’s the town gradually grew and became
home to apricot, walnut, and Valencia Orange groves.

Today, Tustin is an urban city maintaining a population of 75,540 people. One can still find
some remnants of the historical buildings that once stood in the 1880’s by visiting “Old Town”
on Main Street and El Camino Real. Tustin is also famous for its two Marine Corps Air Station
blimp hangars. The hangars were built early in World War II to house airships. In 1951 the
former Naval Air Station Santa Ana was reactivated as the Marine Corps Air Station Santa
Ana to support the Korean War. Both hangars remain untouched and today are registered on
the National Register of Historic Places and designated National Historic Civil Engineering
Landmarks.
