Santa Monica is a beach city located in Los Angeles County. Since the 2010 census, the city
maintains a population of 89,736 residents. The area making up Santa Monica was originally
known as Saint Monica of Hippo, who was a Christian saint and the mother of Augustine of
Hippo. Often, Spanish settlers visited the area now known as Santa Monica on the feast day of
Saint Monica of Hippo.
In the early 1980’s, the Santa Monican’s downtown was renovated increasing the areas jobs
and tourist appeal. Today, this downtown is known as the popular Third Street Promenade,
an outdoor shopping district that is pedestrian friendly and stretches about three blocks. The
Promenade houses many popular and high-ends shops as well as unique restaurants. Santa
Monica is also home to the Majestic movie theater, which was built in 1912, and the Santa
Monica Pier, which dates back to 1909. The Santa Monica Pier, now a popular tourist attraction,
is also home to the Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome carousal, which was built at the same time
as the pier and is also a national historic landmark. |
