Indio, California is located within Riverside County and is a rapidly growing community. Indio is located in the Coachella Valley of Southern California’s Colorado Desert region. The city is located a short distance (about 86 miles) north of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. As of the 2010 census, Indio had a population of over 76,000 people, which was an increase of nearly 50% from the 2000 census, and well above the national average growth of 10 percent. The City of Indio came about because of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s need for a halfway point between Yuma, Arizona and Los Angeles, California. The name “Indio,” Spanish for “Indian” was chosen because the city was to be initially named Indian Wells, but because many towns had that name “Indio” was chosen.
Indio plays hosts to many festivals, which caused the chamber of commerce to deem Indio “The City of Festivals.” Among the most notable is the Tamale festival held in December. In addition, Indio hosts the annual 3-day long music festival, known as Coachella. Each year, Coachella offers concerts throughout the day. |
