Costa Mesa is a city located in Orange County, California. It was incorporated in 1953 and, as
of the 2010 census, has a population of 109,960. Costa Mesa was founded by a rancher named
Harper and was originally known as the Harper community. Harper renamed the city to Costa
Mesa, which means “coast table” in Spanish because of the city’s geography made it appear as a
plateau by the coast.

Today, Costa Mesa is an urban city whose economy is largely based on retail and commerce.
Costa Mesa is most famous for being the home to the South Coast Plaza, a large and high-end

one billion dollars per year. In 2004, the shopping center received the Federal Trademark as
the “Ultimate Shopping Resort.” Costa Mesa is also home to the Orange County Performing Arts
Center and the South Coast Repertory.
