The city of Cerritos was officially incorporated in 1956 as the City of Diary Valley and, today, maintains a population of 49,041 people. During the time of incorporation the name, City of Dairy Valley, symbolized city’s 400 dairies and over 100,000 cows and chickens. In the 1950’s, the city’s cows outnumbered its residents by 29 to 1. In 1967, the city’s name was changed to Cerritos to represent the city’s original land grant from Spanish settlers, Rancho Los Cerritos.
Today, Cerritos is an urban city that believes in progress and modern development. In 1978, Cerritos created the first solar heated City Hall complex. In the 1980’s, Cerritos created the Cerritos Auto Square, which produces more than 6.8 million dollars in sales tax revenues yearly. In the 1990’s, the City established the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, which attracts national and international entertainment and draws in residents from all over Southern California. In 2002, Cerritos opened the Experience Library, which provides the residents of Cerritos a large, technically advanced space for reading as well as community events. |
