The city of Carson is part of Los Angeles County and is located about sixteen miles south of
downtown Los Angeles. Carson is bordered by Torrance on the west and the city of Long Beach
on the east. Since the 2010 Census, Carson has a population of 91,714 people. The city was
officially incorporated in 1968 and is the youngest municipality in the southern bay region of
Los Angeles. Initially, the city’s late incorporation posed many political disadvantages for its
residents.

Up until 1968, the community had no political representation and it ended up as the dumping
ground for its incorporated neighboring cities, such as Torrance and Redondo Beach. Carson
became home to many unwanted landfills, refuse dumps, and auto dismantling parts. However,
since its incorporation, the city has acted quickly to close down some of these unwanted
facilities. Today, the city’s motto is “future unlimited,” which fittingly represents the potentional
of this young city.

Carson is home to California State University, Dominguez Hills. The school was established
in response to the 1965 Watts riots. After the riots, the Carson community demanded higher
education opportunities for its residents. Carson is also home to the Home Depot Center.
