The City of Artesia is known for its diverse community. The city was officially incorporated in 1959. However, town of Artesia has existed since 1875 when the Artesia School District was established. The city’s name is influenced by the Artesian wells in the area. During the 1920’s, Dutch and Portuguese settlers brought the dairy industry to Artesia developing the area into one of Southern California’s most popular dairy districts.

 Today, Artesia has a population of 16,522 people. The city is bordered by Cerritos and Norwalk. The city of Cerritos surrounds Artesia by the west, south, and east sides. The city of Norwalk borders Artesia to the north.

Artesia is also home to a large number of popular and well frequented Indian-owned stores, restaurants, and a movie theater, known as Naz Cinemas, are found along Pioneer Blvd and South Street. Some of these stores, such as Ambala, Ashoka the Great Restaurant, Bhindi Jewelers, and Neema Sari Palace have been in existence since the 1990’s and offer great comfort and familiarity to the greater Southern California South East Asian community. Proposals have been made to call this portion of Artesia as “Little India.”  Currently, the city’s councilmember’s are undecided on this proposal.
